Hsiao, Feng (Fred Shaw) Age 91 (Chinese age 92), a beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Chinese Community Leader, Business Leader, Sports Fan and Friend. Feng Hsiao (Fred) passed away peacefully on June 21, 2010 at his home in Richfield. Fred is survived by his wife Jennie and his three sons and their wives/families: Howell (Nina) Shaw and grandchildren Julian and Isabel; Hoyt (Zhen Zhen Luo) Hsiao; and Holden (Yu Wen) Hsiao and grandson David.

Born May 19, 1919 and raised in Xian, China, Fred was an undergraduate at National Wu Han University. Fred earned a scholarship for post-graduate schooling in the United States and received a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. He came to Minneapolis in 1947 to attend the University of Minnesota for his PhD studies. He began working in the construction industry in 1949 at Orville E. Madsen and Sons, where he built his reputation of honesty and integrity. Fred founded Shaw-Lundquist Associates, Inc. in 1974 and directed the business to become one of the largest Minority-Owned companies in the Midwest and the largest Asian General Contractor in the nation. He was a founding member of Chinese American Association of Minnesota (CAAM), a founder of the Twin Cities Chinese Christian Church, and one of the founders of the Chinese American Business Association of Minnesota (CABAM). He and Jennie created a scholarship fund and a fellowship fund at the University of Minnesota China Center. He was also a founder of the National Association of Minority Contractors - Upper Midwest Chapter (NAMC-UM) and was a past vice president and a past treasurer of the organization. Fred received many honors including the National NAMC Hall of Fame in 2004; the Metropolitan Economic Development Association's (MEDA) Hall of Fame in 2005; the Associated General Contractors of MN's 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award, the Twin Cities International Citizens' International Immigrant Achievement Award in 2007, and many others.

Fred was a gentle, kind, generous, and compassionate person who loved his family and work. He is greatly missed.

Memorial Service:
Tuesday, June 29, 5:00 PM, Christ Presbyterian Church, 6901 Normandale Road, Edina.
Interment:
Wednesday, June 30, 10:00 AM beginning at Washburn- McReavy Edina Chapel and proceeding to Lakewood Cemetery, 3600 Hennepin Avenue South, Minneapolis.
