July 23 and 24:
A Simple Life (2011)
Directed by Ann Hui
35mm, 118 minutes
Reuniting superstar Andy Lau with his godmother Deanie Ip on the big screen for the first time in 23 years, A Simple Life is a deeply moving story about the relationship between a young man and a family servant that is handled with exquisite affection and grace by Ann Hui. Winner of Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture at the 2012 Hong Kong Film Awards.
“Ms. Hui, a rare successful female director in the Hong Kong film industry, drew her story from real events, and the movie retains a tonic flavor of the everyday: its drama unfolds simply, without explosive moments but not without emotion. She and her two excellent leads keep the film buoyant. ” - Rachel Saltz, New York Times
